They appeared live with special guest Johnny Cajun, at the West End Cultural Centre and brought the proverbial house down. 2010 was a breakout year for Trombone Shorty, but his story has been building for over two decades. New Orleans has watched his rise, from playing trumpet and trombone in a jazz band led by his older brother James when he was six, to his breakthrough in 2005 at age 19, when he toured the world as a member of Lenny Kravitz’s band. “Shorty’s a genius,” says Kravitz. “He plays his ass off and he’s a beautiful human being.” The following year, Troy and other New Orleans stars performed with U2 and Green Day, collaborating as one band, during the Louisiana Superdome’s post–Hurricane Katrina re-opening spectacular. Soon after, Troy’s Christmas 2006 acting debut on NBC’s series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip – leading a group of New Orleans musicians in a performance of the holiday classic O Holy Night – drew such an enthusiastic response from viewers that NBC released the single for free download on NBC.com. Taking a break from the road in 2008, he performed at the NBA All-Star Game with Harry Connick Jr., Kermit Ruffins, and Branford Marsalis.
